Matsuya Onoue discusses modern Kindaichi role in film ‘Yatsumabamura’

The film ‘Yatsumabamura’ is currently being released in theaters, featuring a modern reimagining of the classic detective Kosuke Kindaichi. In this version, directed by horror specialist Takashi Shimizu, the setting has been updated to the contemporary era.

Actor Matsuya Onoue, who portrays Kindaichi, discussed his approach to the role, noting that he aimed to move away from the traditional image of the detective. Instead of the disheveled appearance seen in previous adaptations, Onoue’s character is depicted with a sense of cleanliness and a modern aesthetic. To distinguish this version, Onoue incorporated a unique habit of touching his ears while thinking, a detail inspired by his own personal interests.

Onoue described the filming process as an opportunity to explore a character that remains relatively ‘normal’ amidst a cast of highly eccentric individuals and supernatural occurrences. He also highlighted the performances of his co-stars, including Tomoya Okuchi.
