Matt Brown criticizes fan backlash against Anthony Smith
Retired UFC fighter Matt Brown has criticized the intense online backlash directed at former heavyweight/light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith following his arrest.
Smith was arrested in Sarpy County, Nebraska, on July 26, facing three felony charges related to an alleged domestic incident involving his wife. While Brown stated he was not defending Smith's actions and emphasized the need for accountability, he argued that the public reaction has crossed the line from accountability into cruelty. Speaking on 'The Fighter vs. The Writer' podcast, Brown noted that fans are judging a complex situation based solely on headlines and social media posts.
Brown also touched upon the mental health challenges retired fighters face, noting that personal demons often resurface once the structure of professional combat sports is removed. Smith has not made a public statement regarding the incident, and his next court appearance is scheduled for August 17.
