Matt Campbell prepares Penn State for 2026 season amid roster overhaul
New Penn State head coach Matt Campbell is preparing to lead the Nittany Lions into the 2026 season following a period of significant roster turnover. Campbell expressed admiration for Beaver Stadium, describing it as “one of the great places to play college football” and noting his desire to build a team that represents the university’s history “the right way.”
As the team approaches its season opener against Marshall on September 5, Campbell noted that the program has undergone its most substantial offseason changes since 2012. The roster overhaul includes 55 players who were not with the program last season, many of whom transferred from various conferences including the Big 12, SEC, and ACC.
Despite the extensive training camp and installation of a new team culture, Campbell admitted to a degree of uncertainty regarding the team's final identity. He described the current phase as a “fear of the unknown,” stating that the coaching staff expects to continue learning about the team's capabilities through the early part of the season.
