Matt Canavan considers Lower House run as Michelle Landry announces retirement

Nationals leader Matt Canavan has indicated he is willing to move from the Senate to the House of Representatives to strengthen his party’s position. This potential move follows the announcement that Michelle Landry, the Nationals’ Chief Whip and Member for Capricornia, will retire at the next federal election.

Landry has held the Capricornia seat since 2013, winning five consecutive terms. While the seat has historically been a stronghold for the Nationals, the party faces potential challenges from Labor and One Nation in the upcoming election. Canavan stated he would do “whatever it takes” to support the party, noting that he is prepared to contest a seat in the Lower House if required.
