Matt Hauser wins WTCS Grand Final as Vasco Vilaca claims world title
Matt Hauser won the WTCS Grand Final in Pontevedra after a close sprint finish against Vasco Vilaca. Although Hauser took the race victory, Vilaca’s second-place finish secured him the title of new short-distance triathlon world champion.
The race featured intense tactical maneuvering during the 1,500-meter swim, where Hungarian athletes Márk Dévay and Márton Kropkó set a fast pace. A breakaway group of 11 athletes, including Hauser, Vilaca, and Ricardo Batista, established a lead during the 40-kilometer cycling stage.
Despite a strong pursuit from a large chasing pack containing Olympic medalists Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, the lead group maintained a gap of approximately 48 seconds heading into the final transition. Hauser led the 10-kilometer run and successfully defended his position in a high-stakes finish.
