Matt Mullenweg returns as Automattic CEO after board leave

Matt Mullenweg has returned to his role as chairman and CEO of Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, following a brief period of leadership instability. Earlier in the week, the company's board had voted to place Mullenweg on a paid leave of absence, appointing Chief Financial Officer Mark Davies to serve as interim CEO.

The transition was marked by significant internal friction. Mullenweg reportedly accused board members of “conspiring” against him and took actions within the company's Slack workspace, including removing other administrators. During the dispute, Mullenweg communicated to employees that he was back “in control” and that the board had reached a new agreement.

A spokesperson for Automattic confirmed Mullenweg's return, stating he holds the position with the “full support of the board.” While Mullenweg's communications during the event included unconventional messages and references to being a “pirate,” the company has officially reinstated his leadership.
