Matt Rhule makes cameo appearance in HBO's Lanterns

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule made a surprise cameo appearance in the season finale of the HBO series ‘Lanterns’. The appearance occurred during a high school football game involving the character Noah Macon, an alien ‘Manhunter’ within the DC Universe storyline.

In the scene, Rhule is seen in the stands before approaching Macon on the field to hand him a Cornhuskers hat, asking, ‘Let’s see how it fits.’ The cameo serves as a narrative link between the show’s Nebraska setting and the real-world university. Rhule noted that the appearance was filmed during a summer 2025 vacation after becoming friends with the show’s executive producer, Chris Mundy.

‘Lanterns’ is part of the DC Universe and follows characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart. While the first season has concluded after eight episodes, HBO has not yet announced a renewal for the series.
