Matt Suhey, Chicago Bears Super Bowl champion, dies at 68

Former Chicago Bears fullback and Super Bowl champion Matt Suhey has died at the age of 68. He was found unresponsive in his Deerfield, Illinois, home on Sunday afternoon. While a specific cause of death has not been released, officials indicated the death was likely medical-related and not suspicious.

Suhey, a standout at Penn State, was drafted by the Bears in the second round of the 1980 NFL Draft. He played 10 seasons in Chicago, appearing in 148 games and serving as a vital lead blocker for Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton. He was a key member of the legendary 1985 championship team, scoring the first touchdown in the Bears' Super Bowl XX victory over the New England Patriots.

Beyond his professional career, Suhey was celebrated for his deep personal bond with Payton. Following Payton’s death in 1999, Suhey remained a close protector and father figure to Payton’s family. Jarrett Payton, Walter’s son, described Suhey as a man who “protected our family” and provided stability during uncertain times.
