Matt Waters appointed AXA XL Head of Large Commercial and Specialty

AXA XL has appointed Matt Waters as the Head of its Large Commercial and Specialty business unit, effective immediately. In this capacity, Waters will oversee the company’s Large Commercial and Specialty lines portfolio across the United States, Canada, and Bermuda.

Waters joined AXA XL in 2022 to launch its Mid-Market business in the Americas. During his tenure, he led the expansion of the team and product portfolio, reportedly exceeding growth expectations while maintaining underwriting discipline. Before joining AXA XL, Waters held various senior leadership roles at Liberty Mutual for 25 years, focusing on segments such as construction and energy.

Lucy Pilko, AXA XL’s CEO for the Americas, noted that Waters’ experience in building successful businesses and teams will be vital as clients navigate complex risks in a challenging insurance environment. Following the appointment, Jim DiVirgilio, the recently retired Chief Claims Officer currently serving as an advisor, will temporarily lead the Mid-Market team while a permanent successor is sought.
