Matteo Bassetti evaluates scientific evidence regarding kefir benefits

Matteo Bassetti, director of infectious diseases at San Martino Hospital in Genoa, has addressed the scientific validity of kefir, noting that while it is an interesting fermented milk rich in bacteria and yeast, it is not a miracle cure.

Regarding its health benefits, Bassetti points out that while kefir may partially modify intestinal microbiota composition, human studies remain scarce and heterogeneous. A 2025 meta-analysis of 24 studies showed a potential reduction in fasting blood glucose, though evidence remains low. However, he cautions against overstating its impact on cholesterol, weight, and general gastrointestinal disorders.

While kefir may be better tolerated by some individuals with lactose intolerance due to the fermentation process, a systematic review of 16 randomized studies concluded there is insufficient evidence to recommend it for the prevention or treatment of specific medical conditions. Bassetti emphasizes that a varied diet, fiber, and a healthy lifestyle are more significant than any single food.
