Matteo Cairoli faces championship setback after Nürburgring pit stop failures

DTM rookie Matteo Cairoli experienced a weekend of extremes at the Nürburgring. After securing a dominant victory from pole position on Saturday, a series of technical failures during Sunday's race hindered his championship prospects.

During Sunday's race, the Emil Frey Ferrari team suffered two problematic pit stops. The first stop lasted 24.8 seconds, and the second took nine seconds, resulting in Cairoli finishing in 13th place. Team boss Lorenz Frey-Hilti and technical chief Jürg Flach attributed the delays to a technical issue with a retaining ring, which caused a wheel nut to fall out due to insufficient tension.

Despite the setback, Cairoli remains a significant contender in the championship. He currently holds sixth place, trailing the leader by 33 points, and holds the highest number of individual race wins in the 2026 season.
