Matteo Franzoso death investigation: FISI archives disciplinary case

The investigation into the death of 25-year-old Italian alpine skier Matteo Franzoso, who died following a fall during training in Chile on September 15, 2025, has resulted in the dismissal of disciplinary proceedings by the FISI Federal Prosecutor.

The investigation concluded that the accident was caused by a combination of factors rather than a single event. These included Franzoso’s maneuver and the structural conditions of the La Parva track. Specifically, a rigid fence was located only a few meters from the track, which did not meet safety criteria for high-speed training. While athletes had previously reported the danger of the area, investigators noted a lack of sufficient oversight by Italian officials regarding the track layout designed by an Austrian technician.

Despite these findings, the Federal Prosecutor decided to archive the case due to insufficient evidence to pursue disciplinary action against specific members. The Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali (FISI) issued a statement responding to media reports regarding “possible errors by technicians,” emphasizing their cooperation with the Republic's Prosecutor, whose criminal investigations remain ongoing. FISI also addressed attempts to link the tragedy to the federation's upcoming elective assembly on October 10, 2026, calling such correlations disrespectful.
