Matteo Franzoso family demands better skiing safety one year after death

One year after the death of alpine skier Matteo Franzoso, his family is calling for increased safety measures and accountability within the skiing community. Franzoso died in a Santiago, Chile, clinic following a crash during a downhill training session at La Parva.

In a recent interview, Olga and Marcello Franzoso expressed frustration with the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), stating they feel abandoned due to a lack of follow-up regarding the incident. They noted that while some physical barriers have been removed, athletes are traveling at higher speeds, making current safety measures insufficient. The parents also criticized the silence of fellow athletes regarding the risks faced on training slopes.

A commemoration was held in Predazzo at the Scuola Alpina della Guardia di Finanza, attended by his family, friends, and members of the Fiamme Gialle. During the ceremony, the family donated Franzoso’s racing suit, helmet, boots, and poles to the Alpine School Museum to honor his memory.
