FIGC leadership faces scrutiny over electoral regularity

Italian football officials and associations are addressing a crisis within the FIGC regarding the registration of President Giovanni Malagò. The controversy stems from Malagò’s membership status at the time of his election, leading to investigations by CONI into the regularity of the federation's electoral processes.

Umberto Calcagno, president of the Associazione Italiana Calciatori (AIC), described the situation as “paradoxical” and expressed support for Malagò. Calcagno emphasized that the issue extends beyond the individual, questioning the perceived regularity of federal operations and the potential impact on the entire sporting system.

Matteo Marani, president of Lega Pro, also voiced opposition to the possibility of a federal commission (commissariamento) being imposed on the FIGC. He characterized such an intervention as a “defeat for sport” and a “trauma for football,” arguing that sports institutions possess the capacity for self-regulation.
