Italy infrastructure: Highway concessions at risk and bridge progress
Italy is facing several major infrastructure and administrative developments. In Sicily, the Consorzio per le Autostrade Siciliane (CAS) is under scrutiny as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has warned of a potential revocation of its highway concession due to management failures and infrastructure maintenance issues. Simultaneously, the Messina Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into public procurement for highway maintenance, resulting in 12 precautionary measures against individuals accused of criminal association to manage public contracts.
On a national level, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has renewed the leadership of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane for the 2026-2028 period, appointing Gianpiero Strisciuglio as CEO and confirming Tommaso Tanzilli as Chairman. Additionally, the Council of Public Works has unanimously approved the executive design phase for the Strait of Messina Bridge, a major project intended to connect Sicily and Calabria.
Other regional updates include the financing of a new roundabout in Piedimonte San Germano to improve access to an automotive industrial hub, and a legal dispute in the Frosinone province regarding the disbursement of 13.5 million euros in waste management credits to local municipalities.
