Matteo Salvini advocates for Italian firms in Russia and post-war gas imports
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has advocated for the protection of approximately 350 Italian companies currently operating in Russia. During a meeting with GIM Unimpresa entrepreneurs in Milan, Salvini noted that 100 of these firms have direct production in Russia, while 250 are involved in import-export activities. He highlighted significant operational hurdles, including difficulties with international payments, customs, logistics, and capital transfers.
Salvini also expressed opposition to potential EU measures that would block all Russian visas, including tourist visas, arguing such moves would further damage the economy. He emphasized that while Italy supports Ukraine, diplomacy should eventually replace military action. He suggested that once the conflict in Ukraine concludes, Italy should work toward restoring full commercial, cultural, and academic ties with Moscow.
Regarding energy, Salvini indicated that Italy could resume importing Russian gas after the war. The Kremlin responded to these suggestions via spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, stating that any resumption of gas supplies would be a commercial matter contingent upon economic profitability and the availability of sufficient volumes, noting that much of Russia's supply has already been diverted to other markets.
