Lega party holds Pontida rally amid internal calls for autonomy

The Lega party held its annual Pontida gathering, marking the first such event since the death of founder Umberto Bossi on March 19. The rally served as a tribute to Bossi, including the dedication of the party’s sacred meadow in his honor and a commemorative video.

Party leader Matteo Salvini addressed supporters, emphasizing the need for unity to succeed from North to South. He called for an end to internal disputes and focused on the party’s identity. However, the event took place amid significant internal tension. Northern regional governors and leaders like Luca Zaia and Massimiliano Romeo have pushed for greater regional autonomy and a potential change to the party statute to move away from a centralized leadership model.

Recent polling shows the party’s support between 5% and 6%. The gathering also featured the slogan ‘Non passa lo straniero’ and included a video message from Spanish Vox leader Santiago Abascal. While Salvini called for cohesion, the presence of anti-Salvini graffiti and calls for a more federalist structure highlight ongoing fractures within the movement.
