Matteo Salvini resigns as Lega secretary to seek re-election

Matteo Salvini has resigned from his position as secretary of the Lega party to facilitate his candidacy for the leadership role at an upcoming extraordinary congress. The congress is scheduled to take place on October 24 and 25, 2026.

Alongside Salvini, deputy secretaries Claudio Durigon, Silvia Sardone, and Alberto Stefani have also resigned. Treasurer Alberto Di Rubba has been appointed acting deputy secretary to manage party administration until a new leader is officially named.

The decision to hold an extraordinary congress follows months of internal tension, particularly from the party’s northern faction. By calling the congress and seeking re-election, Salvini aims to consolidate his leadership and unify the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
