Matteo Salvini visits prison, outlines party agenda and Messina bridge plan
Italian vice‑premier and transport minister Matteo Salvini visited the Bollate prison near Milan, meeting detainee jeweller Mario Roggero for the third time. Salvini said he had not commented on any possible pardon and would keep a "low profile" on the matter.
During the visit he previewed the Lega party’s upcoming congress (direttivo) in Milan, stressing priorities such as tax cuts, reducing bureaucracy, bolstering police and security forces, and preparing for local elections in many municipalities next year, beginning with Milan. He referenced the party’s Pontida gathering scheduled for 20 September. Salvini also reiterated his aim to launch work on the Messina Strait bridge before the end of the current legislative term. Earlier that morning he had toured the Trenitalia operational centre in Rome.
