Matternet unveils M3 autonomous drone for 11-pound payload delivery
Matternet has unveiled the M3, a next-generation autonomous drone delivery platform designed to scale drone logistics by removing the need for on-site operators. The system consists of three components: the M3 aircraft, a docking station for storage and charging, and the ‘Portal,’ an off-grid drop-box that allows employees to deposit multiple packages for automated collection and delivery.
The M3 aircraft can carry payloads of up to 11 pounds (5 kg) within a 10-mile (16 km) service radius. Its cargo bay is designed to accommodate standard merchant packaging, such as food bags and retail boxes, with specialized configurations planned for healthcare and industrial use.
Matternet has identified Dave’s Hot Chicken as its first launch partner in the United States and Apian, which operates a National Health Service drone network in central London, as its partner in the United Kingdom. The company is targeting the start of commercial service for the second half of 2027, though the timeline remains subject to obtaining an FAA type certificate.
