UK animal welfare prosecutions lead to bans for farmers and dog owner
Two livestock farmers in Staffordshire were prosecuted for severe animal neglect. Matthew and Courtney Shuker of Westwood Hall Farm admitted more than 30 animal‑welfare charges, received suspended prison sentences and were banned from keeping farm animals for 12 years and domestic animals for 10 years after 243 calves were removed from the farm in 2023.
Jennifer Bennett, a farmer near Uttoxeter, was sentenced to a 14‑week suspended jail term, 12 months of community service and a ten‑year ban on keeping animals after almost 100 cattle were found dead or emaciated and were removed from her property.
In Lancashire, Michelle Batty pleaded guilty to four animal‑welfare offences after three of her four dogs were found in a filthy home with severe foot and leg injuries and were euthanised. She received a six‑year animal‑keeping ban, a 12‑month community order, 100 hours of unpaid work and ten rehabilitation activity days.
