Matthew Bagonza arrested amid PACEID dispute in Uganda
Matthew Bagonza, a senior official and secretariat head for the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID), has reportedly been arrested in Entebbe.
Odrek Rwabwogo, the chairman of PACEID and presidential adviser, stated he spent over 18 hours searching various security agencies, including the police and intelligence services, to locate Bagonza. Rwabwogo eventually met with President Yoweri Museveni, who reportedly claimed he had no knowledge of the arrest and had not issued any orders for Bagonza’s detention.
The incident follows public statements by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who described PACEID as an illegal organization and threatened to arrest its members. Kainerugaba also shared social media posts regarding Bagonza’s custody, using the term “basement” to describe the detention, a phrase that has significant political connotations in Uganda.
