Matthew Creek wildfire area restriction reduced
The BC Wildfire Service has reduced the area restriction for the Matthew Creek wildfire, effective September 3, 2026. The fire, located approximately 10 km west of Kimberley, is estimated to have burned 1,826 hectares since its discovery in July.
Recent favorable weather conditions, including cool and rainy weather, have helped reduce fire activity and assist firefighting crews, heavy equipment, and aerial resources. While the restricted area has been downsized, the remaining restrictions are scheduled to stay in place until October 31, 2026, or until they are officially rescinded.
Under the Wildfire Act, unauthorized entry into the restricted zone is prohibited. Exceptions are made for individuals traveling to or from their principal residence (if not under an evacuation order), those using designated highways, or personnel supporting wildfire suppression and enforcement. Violators of the restriction may face a fine of $1,150.
