Kimberley, BC wildfire forces evacuations and health‑care relocations

The Matthew Creek wildfire, discovered on July 18 west of Kimberley, British Columbia, expanded to an estimated 869 hectares and remains out‑of‑control. The fire is part of the Bootleg Complex, with wind, warm temperatures and abundant dead fuels driving rapid growth. An evacuation alert continues for the City of Kimberley and rural properties around St Mary’s Lake.

Fire‑suppression efforts include 35 firefighters, seven helicopters, heavy equipment and the construction of a helipad, bridge and potential dip‑tank to improve access. Structure‑protection crews are prioritising key buildings and infrastructure.

Because of the fire threat, Interior Health evacuated 53 residents from the Kimberley Special Care Home to alternate locations outside the city. Families were contacted directly, and crisis‑line support was offered. The health authority is coordinating with regional partners and the BC Wildfire Service to ensure continued care and safety for affected patients.
