Matthew Lillard discusses career decline following Scooby-Doo sequel

Actor Matthew Lillard has reflected on the financial and professional difficulties he faced following the release of the live-action Scooby-Doo films. While the first film in 2002 earned $275 million worldwide, the sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, grossed approximately $181 million, roughly $95 million less than its predecessor.

Lillard stated that the underperformance of the sequel caused his career to take a “real nosedive for a long time.” The resulting lack of work forced him and his wife to downsize their lives, which included selling their house and cars to maintain affordability.

Despite feeling resentment toward the franchise for a period due to his stalled blockbuster ambitions, Lillard noted that he does not regret the role. He credited the paycheck from the second film with providing the necessary financial support to help his family through the difficult period. He described the experience as a “real humbling” that eventually helped him rebuild his career as a character actor.
