Matthew Lillard discusses queer connection in new ‘Carrie’ series

Actor Matthew Lillard expressed his hope that queer audiences will find resonance in the new ‘Carrie’ series, directed by Mike Flanagan. Speaking alongside co-star Amber Midthunder, Lillard noted a personal connection to the story of an outsider, drawing from his own experiences growing up feeling excluded and his perspective as a parent to a queer child.

The series is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, focusing on a teenage girl whose supernatural abilities emerge amidst a sheltered life, a strained relationship with her mother, and bullying at school. Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie, with Samantha Sloyan portraying her mother, Margaret. The production is described as a fresh retelling that provides deeper character exploration within the horror genre.
