Matthew Maurice wins 1 million Australian dollars in fishing competition
Australian angler Matthew Maurice has won one million Australian dollars, approximately 620,000 euros, after catching a tagged barramundi during the Million Dollar Fish competition in the Northern Territory.
Maurice, who was fishing with his brother, described the moment he spotted the fish's tag as the most stressful two minutes of his life. He is only the second person in the twelve-year history of the annual event to catch the top prize. Other tagged fish in the competition carry a prize of 10,000 Australian dollars.
The competition is designed to attract tourists to the Northern Territory by tagging 101 barramundi each season and releasing them back into the water. Maurice stated he intends to use the winnings to pay off debts, purchase a house, and treat himself.
