Matthew Maurice wins $1 million barramundi prize in Northern Territory
Darwin angler Matthew Maurice has become a millionaire after catching a $1 million-tagged barramundi during the Northern Territory’s Million Dollar Fish competition. The catch occurred on October 29 at Corroboree Billabong while Maurice was fishing with his younger brother, who was visiting from overseas.
Maurice, a regular participant in the competition, spotted a bright red tag on the 80-centimetre fish as it jumped from the water. He is only the second person in the 12-year history of the competition to claim the top prize. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro personally informed Maurice of the win, an event that left the angler visibly emotional.
