Matthew McConaughey declined lead role in HBO's The Last of Us

Actor Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he turned down the lead role of Joel Miller in the HBO series ‘The Last of Us,’ a part that was ultimately played by Pedro Pascal. Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, McConaughey explained that the decision was based on his professional focus at the time. He noted that he was prioritizing writing and exploring leadership roles rather than acting in long-term television commitments.

McConaughey expressed hesitation regarding the multi-year dedication required for a successful series, contrasting it with the single-film commitment of his upcoming project, ‘The Rivals of Amziah King.’ He referenced his previous success with HBO’s ‘True Detective’ as a moment when high-profile film actors began transitioning into prestigious television roles.

Series co-creator Craig Mazin had previously confirmed that discussions with McConaughey took place during the early stages of development, though he characterized the interaction as a conversation rather than a formal negotiation. Mazin expressed satisfaction with the final casting of Pascal.
