Matthew McConaughey reveals why he declined ‘The Last of Us’ lead role
Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he was considered for the lead role of Joel in the HBO series ‘The Last of Us’ but ultimately declined the offer. Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, the Oscar winner explained that at the time, his professional focus was shifting toward writing and seeking leadership roles rather than frequent acting engagements.
McConaughey noted that following the success of ‘True Detective’, he was cautious about committing to long-term television projects. While he acknowledged the quality of the series, he stated, ‘The Last of Us was really good, but it wasn't what I was looking for at that time.’
Showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed that discussions with McConaughey took place, noting that while the actor would have been great, he is satisfied with the final version starring Pedro Pascal.
In other series news, production for the third season of ‘The Last of Us’ is currently underway. However, actress Bella Ramsey is reportedly taking a break from filming to recharge and is expected to rejoin the production later this summer.
