Matthew Needham discusses reimagined Joker in Batman: Caped Crusader

In the second season of the animated seriesBatman: Caped Crusader’, the character of the Joker undergoes a significant reimagining. Set in a noir-infused 1940s Gotham City, the version of the Joker voiced by Matthew Needham is described as moody, somber, and devoid of his traditional laughter. This iteration of the character draws inspiration from early Batman comics and German expressionist cinema, focusing on a villain who seeks to exterminate ‘the vermin’ of Gotham City.

Voice actor Matthew Needham noted in an interview that the production team, including Bruce Timm, James Tucker, and Geoffrey Thorne, provided clear instructions to create a version of the character distinct from previous portrayals. The direction aimed for a cold and different take on the iconic villain to suit the series' specific vision.
