Matthew Schaefer prepares for second NHL season with New York Islanders

New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer is entering his second NHL season following a historic rookie campaign. The 19-year-old was the unanimous winner of the Calder Trophy after tying the record for goals by a rookie defenseman with 23 and recording 59 points, the most ever by an 18-year-old.

Islanders head coach Peter DeBoer has noted Schaefer’s potential as a future team leader. To further develop his game, the team is experimenting with his positioning; despite being a left-handed shot, Schaefer is being given opportunities to play on the right side of the ice. In his recent debut against the New York Rangers, Schaefer demonstrated this versatility by scoring a power-play goal while playing in a top pairing alongside Adam Pelech.

Schaefer, who lived with veteran Matt Martin during his rookie year, expressed confidence in his ability to manage the rigors of the league, noting that he has learned how to better handle recovery and physical maintenance to remain competitive throughout the season.
