Matthew Shepard murder anniversary marks 28 years
The anniversary of the murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student, marks 28 years since the high-profile hate crime occurred in Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard was abducted, beaten, and tied to a fence, dying from severe head injuries. The attackers were subsequently sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
Following the tragedy, Shepard’s parents, Dennis and Judy Shepard, established The Matthew Shepard Foundation. The organization aims to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion, & Acceptance” through advocacy, education, and outreach programs. Judy Shepard has become a prominent figure in the movement for tolerance and diversity, helping to spearhead legislation to combat hate crimes.
The impact of the case remains significant, highlighted by the documentary “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,” which explores Shepard’s life and the devastation caused by his death.
