Halloween safety: advice on costumes, road safety, and food allergies

As Halloween approaches, various authorities and organizations are issuing safety guidelines to mitigate risks associated with the holiday.

In Madrid, consumer officials are warning against hazardous costumes that may feature strangulation risks, insufficient ventilation in masks, or small parts that pose choking hazards for young children. They advise consumers to check for CE marking and mandatory labeling in Spanish.

In the United States, road safety experts in Minnesota and Massachusetts are urging motorists to slow down and remain alert for pedestrians, particularly as Daylight Saving Time ends, leading to earlier sunsets. Parents are encouraged to use reflective tape, glow sticks, and flashlights to increase children's visibility.

Health professionals are also highlighting food safety. Allergists warn that many popular candies contain common allergens like peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, milk, soy, and eggs. The Teal Pumpkin Project is noted as a resource for allergy awareness. Additionally, the Minnesota Dental Association advises caution with sour candies, as their high acid content can erode tooth enamel.
