Matthias Lilienthal appointed to lead Berlin's Volksbühne
Matthias Lilienthal has been appointed to lead the Volksbühne in Berlin, marking a new era for the theater following the death of René Pollesch. Lilienthal, formerly the chief dramaturg for Frank Castorf, previously saw success as the head of HAU.
The Volksbühne was historically recognized for its artistic radicalism and cultural impact during the Castorf era, which spanned from 1992 to 2017. Following Castorf's departure, the institution faced a period of decline. Lilienthal aims to restore the theater's reputation as a significant cultural hub through radical social engagement.
