Matthias Sammer urges culture overhaul in German football

Former German World‑Cup winner and Borussia Dortmund adviser Matthias Sammer addressed the International Coach Congress in Mainz, calling for a fundamental mental shift in German football. He argued that the sport needs “types, not yes‑sayers”, emphasizing greater work ethic, will and ambition over aesthetic play, and urged the DFB to set clear leadership and direction.

Sammer also criticised the current handling of sport directors, saying the system lacks properly trained officials and that DFB sport director Rudi Völler must address the gap. He praised the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as national team coach and stressed that the new coach, together with a reformed structure, is essential for restoring Germany’s competitiveness.
