Mattress disposal rates significantly higher than other furniture

Data from moving service Lugg reveals that mattresses are far more likely to be disposed of than other types of furniture. An analysis of over 1.5 million bookings since 2016 shows that approximately 85% of bed and mattress transport trips over the last two years were for disposal.

In contrast, other major furniture categories such as chairs, sofas, shelving, and tables saw disposal rates between 63% and 67%, while dressers had the lowest rate at 56%. This trend has remained consistent in Lugg’s data from 2021 through September 2026.

The high disposal rate for mattresses is attributed to limited reuse options. Unlike tables or dressers, which can easily be sold or donated, mattresses face strict donation rules and varying secondhand-bedding laws. For instance, in Virginia, commercial resale of used bedding requires specific sanitization and labeling processes, limiting the available routes for secondhand mattresses.
