Mattress Factory celebrates 50 years of site-specific art in Pittsburgh

The Mattress Factory, an artist-centered museum and international residency program in Pittsburgh, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1977 by sculptor Barbara Luderowski, the institution is recognized for its focus on site-specific installations that engage with the architecture and historical context of its three buildings in the Mexican War Streets neighborhood.

Artistic Director Anthony Elms emphasizes that the museum aims to go beyond merely presenting culture by actively making it. He describes the facility as a space where artists can experiment, ask questions, and receive support for ambitious projects. The museum utilizes an invitation-based selection process to find artists willing to challenge the institution and its spaces.

As part of its ongoing programming, the Mattress Factory is currently collaborating with the Carnegie International on an installation by artists Arturo Kameya and Claudia Martínez Garay, located in the Sampsonia Wayspace through January 3, 2027.
