Maui evaluates $53M desalination plant to address water scarcity
The Maui Department of Water Supply is evaluating a proposed $53 million desalination plant in Kīhei to address critical water shortages. Officials noted that the current system is “dangerously close to capacity,” particularly during dry months when production nearly matches demand. As regional development continues, water demand is projected to increase by 6 million to 10 million gallons per day by 2040.
Community members have expressed skepticism regarding the project's cost and the environmental impact of brine disposal. Many residents suggested prioritizing conservation and water reuse strategies before pursuing desalination. The county is considering applying for funding from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to begin the planning and design process.
In a separate effort to manage utility costs and land use, the County of Maui has implemented solar energy solutions by mounting non-penetrating, ballasted photovoltaic (PV) arrays on the roofs of circular concrete water storage reservoirs. This initiative aims to offset the high electrical costs associated with municipal water pumping and distribution by utilizing existing utility-owned land.
