Maui wildfire incidents drop 74% amid rainy season

Maui County has experienced a 74% decrease in wildfires during the period from June 1 to September 1, 2025, compared to the same timeframe in previous years. The Maui Fire Department responded to 23 wildfires this year, down from 89 during a period that was previously one of the driest seasons in decades.

Spokesperson Chris Stankis noted that increased rainfall has reduced fire risks in many areas. However, officials warned that leeward regions remain susceptible to rapid drying when sunny. Additionally, the department remains concerned about hurricane-related winds, which can increase fire intensity and cause power lines to fall, creating new ignition hazards.
