Maulana Fazlur Rehman proposes new Charter of Democracy in Pakistan
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called for the government and opposition to establish a new Charter of Democracy (CoD) to address rising political instability and declining tolerance in Pakistan.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Fazlur Rehman warned that the country is facing worsening law and order and urged political forces to resolve differences through dialogue rather than unconstitutional measures or violence. He emphasized that parliament is a representative institution and asserted that the country belongs to its citizens rather than military officers.
Following his proposal, opposition leaders have signaled support. An Opposition Alliance meeting concluded with plans to finalize the terms of the charter through mutual consultation. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) indicated it would take its members into confidence regarding the proposal. The opposition alliance intends to formally announce the new Charter of Democracy during an All Parties Hurriyat Conference scheduled for the second week of November.
