Maule Region faces rising unemployment and gender labor gaps

The Maule Region in Chile is experiencing significant labor market challenges. According to the latest report from the Maule Labor Observatory (OLM) for the April-June 2026 quarter, the regional unemployment rate reached 10.4%, a 2.3 percentage point increase from the previous year. This rise is partly attributed to seasonal fluctuations in the agricultural sector following the harvest period.

A notable gender disparity persists in the region. The female unemployment rate stands at 12%, compared to 9.2% for men. Additionally, female labor participation is at 47.8%, leaving a gap of over 20 percentage points relative to male participation, which is at 68%.

Broader national discussions in Chile highlight that maternal responsibilities and current labor laws contribute to these gender gaps. Current legislation requiring companies with 20 or more employees to fund nurseries has been criticized as a barrier to female hiring. A proposed legislative project aims to decouple nursery rights from the gender of the parents and company size, funding the benefit through a reallocation of the Unemployment Insurance fund to promote gender equality and shared responsibility.
