Maule Region investigation launched after 57 penguins found dead

Authorities in Chile's Maule Region have launched an investigation following the discovery of 57 dead penguins in the sectors of Chanco, Pelluhue, and Curepto. Initial inspections by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) found no visible signs of external wounds or contamination on the specimens.

One primary hypothesis being investigated is that the penguins may have accidentally become trapped in curtain nets used for fishing. Sernapesca has filed a formal complaint to clarify the circumstances of the deaths and determine if any parties are responsible. The Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade (BRIDEMA) of the PDI has been tasked with conducting the investigation.
