Maurice MacGowan, father of Pogues frontman Shane, dies in Limerick

Maurice Matthew MacGowan, the father of former Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan, died peacefully on 3 August 2026 after a short illness. He passed away at University Hospital Limerick, surrounded by his family. Born in Dublin’s Ranelagh district, he later lived in Silvermines and Nenagh, County Tipperary. Maurice was predeceased by his wife Therese and his son Shane, who died in November 2023.

A funeral service is scheduled at Shannon Crematorium on the Saturday following his death, with family members including his daughter Siobhan, son‑in‑law Anthony, daughter‑in‑law Victoria, and extended relatives expected to attend. The family has asked for contributions to a charitable cause rather than flowers.
