Mauricio Macri criticizes Kirchnerism and reflects on presidency
Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri has criticized Kirchnerism, characterizing it as a return to the ‘first Peronism’ defined by resentment, arbitrariness, and cheap populism. During a streaming interview, Macri argued that while Carlos Menem represented the ‘last Peronism,’ the current Kirchnerist movement has manipulated the concept of social justice to favor state appropriation and enrichment.
Macri expressed concern regarding the political trend in Argentina, citing author Mario Vargas Llosa to question why a country with such potential continues to elect leaders that he claims impoverish it. He warned that the movement still has the potential to return to power.
Reflecting on his own presidency, Macri explained his decision not to seek office again by highlighting the immense symbolic pressure and loss of personal freedom associated with the role. He noted a ‘quantum’ difference between governing the City of Buenos Aires and the Presidency, stating that the public tends to either idealize or seek to destroy the President based on high expectations.
