Mauricio Macri eyes 2027 presidential bid as PRO seeks leverage with government
Former president Mauricio Macri is touring Argentine provinces under the slogan “El próximo paso” while keeping the option of running in the 2027 presidential election open. Sources close to the PRO say he will make a definitive decision in the first quarter of 2027, but will continue party activities throughout the year.
The PRO sees Macri’s potential candidacy as a way to negotiate with the government and its legislative ally La Libertad Avanza, despite existing tensions. Polls estimate Macri could attract 15‑18 percent of the vote if he builds a federal coalition resembling Juntos por la Cambio. He has expressed approval of the recent appointment of Diego Santilli as chief of staff and highlighted that many current ministers previously served in his administration.
