Mauritania considers new law to combat illegal gambling

The Mauritanian government is reviewing a draft law aimed at regulating and criminalizing gambling and betting activities. This legislative effort follows a recent interministerial committee meeting led by the Prime Minister to address the social and economic issues caused by the rise of these practices.

Although gambling is officially prohibited in Mauritania, various forms of betting, including bingo, poker, and blind, are reportedly tolerated and practiced with impunity. The surge in these activities has led to significant financial ruin for many individuals, particularly among the youth, while also raising questions regarding the origins of sudden, unexplained wealth in the country.
