Mauritania faces electricity crisis and social health initiatives
Mauritania is facing a significant electricity crisis following fires at two SOMELEC transformer stations. These incidents caused widespread power outages in Nouakchott for at least five days, disrupting economic activity, hospital services, airport operations, and sports. A national commission of inquiry, supported by international technical assistance from countries including France, Switzerland, Canada, Morocco, and Senegal, has been established to investigate the causes and propose solutions.
In response to social needs in the Brakna region, the movement ‘Main dans la Main’ has launched a social initiative in Boghé. Through this program, 70 vulnerable families will receive health insurance coverage via the Caisse Nationale de Solidarité en Santé (CNASS). The initiative, supported by Minister of Justice Mohamed Ould Soueïdatt, aims to improve healthcare access and reduce medical expenses for low-income households.
