Mauritania faces social challenges despite regional security stability

Mauritania remains a rare pocket of stability in the Sahel region, having avoided major terrorist attacks since 2011 despite the surrounding instability characterized by coups and jihadist activity. This security is maintained through strict border controls by special intervention groups and a strategy of political anticipation and diplomatic equidistance.

However, the nation faces significant internal risks due to social pressures. With over 60% of the population under the age of 25, the country struggles with endemic unemployment, a strained healthcare system, and an unstable education system. While the government has introduced reforms regarding health coverage, pensions, and schooling, the impact of these measures has yet to address the urgent needs of the youth and the lingering social consequences of officially abolished slavery.
