Mauritania First Lady launches third phase of Sahel women's empowerment project
First Lady Mariem Mohamed Fadel Dah addressed officials and community leaders in Aleg, Mauritania, to inaugurate the third phase of the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend project (SWEDD+). She highlighted education, health and economic participation of women as essential pillars for a stable and prosperous society and urged coordinated action from ministries, regional authorities, religious scholars, media and civil‑society groups.
Representatives of the World Bank and the United Nations Population Fund were present, underscoring international support for the initiative. The launch marks the latest step in a multi‑year effort to improve gender equity and demographic outcomes across the Sahel region.
